Why not think about an audio book? These stories on CD's and even tapes (if you still have that available to you) are great ways to catch up on your "reading" titles while you may not be able to hold a book or tablet.

Here a few great new ones we have added to our collection this month:

Insurgent by Veronica Roth (young adult)
Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator by Roald Dahl (juvenile)
Mathilda by Roald Dahl (juvenile)
The BFG by Roald Dahl (juvenile)
Son by Lois Lowry (young adult)
Pinkalicious by Victoria Kann (young juvenile)

You will find audio stories in the juvenile shelves by the non-fiction section, as well as included in our Whales of Fun Kits on the hanging racks. Not sure where to look for them? Ask one of us in the Youth Services Department.
Parents and kids are invited to come create with LEGO blocks (their own or the library's), snack, and enter the door prize drawing for free books. What a fun filled way to spend a Saturday morning!
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">We do ask for pre-registration so that we may set up enough table space for participants. Just call the Youth Services Department (732-5732) before noon on Friday. Then come Saturday morning and have fun.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The public is encouraged to come see what the families create. Past years have included baseball stadiums, a library complete with shelves and circulation desk, New York City, and more! <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> Hope to see many of my favorite faces that day.Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1699087895878268718.post-84224514296683268592013-12-12T15:09:00.001-06:002013-12-12T15:09:36.631-06:00Tuesday With SantaThis week Santa was at the library to visit with our friends. This is a popular evening for everyone, so be sure to register by calling 732-5732 so the library staff can plan enough materials for all our young visitors! You may come at any time between 5:00 - 6:30 PM as we are aware of busy schedules during this part of the year.

Children may tell Santa what is on their Christmas wish lists, or just chat with him as parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles, etc. take pictures to add to their family memory albums. Then they can create a simple Christmas craft to take home, or write a follow up letter to Santa to "mail" in our North Pole mailbox. Of course, the children can take home a candy cane from the library to either hang on their tree or munch on as they dream of all those special toys on their lists.

Come make this a family tradition for your family. There will be plenty of Christmas books and movies available for check out. Who can resist getting into the holiday spirit when memories are being made?!Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1699087895878268718.post-54734189230394941692013-10-30T13:45:00.004-05:002013-10-30T13:57:34.442-05:00Halloween at the Library!Fall Session story times are winding down. Can you believe it! Where did the time go? Our little ones have had many experiences this session: the circus, autumn leaves, costumes, farm animals, bears, and many more! We have played with bubbles, balloons, beanbags, and shakers! We have read stories, pretended with Magic Bubble Gum, read stories, sang songs, and read more stories. This week we even celebrated by dressing up in our Halloween costumes, so be sure to check out the photos below.

The Library will again offer a spring session of story times and crafts beginning in late February. You may fill out a form at the Youth Services desk and we will call or send you a program sign-up reminder.

Keep in mind our coming events: Family Reading Night on November 21 and Tuesday With Santa on December 10. Although we are not signing up for those events yet, be sure to watch the "What's New @ the Library" on our website home page.
Last week Troy Roark juggled his way through a Thursday morning family event, followed by Magician Richard Landry and his bunny, Snowball, today. The Art/Craft classes have made life size "shadow" people that describe summer activities the young people hope to do in the coming months and last week's class made door hangers with the summer theme. Story time groups have been "traveling" with trucks and boats!

Many of our story times and other classes have been at full capacity, so be sure to call ahead to register. We have even been able to get a few children on the waiting lists into the slots they have wanted due to cancellations, so be sure to ask about the waiting list if our attendance for a class is full for the week.

If you have not been in to the library yet, sign up NOW so you don't miss any of the fun. Many more adventures are planned for June and July. Check out our
calendar on the Youth Service page of the website or stop by the Youth
Services desk in the Annex to get one for your frig!

Beep! Beep! Off we go!Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1699087895878268718.post-65164103089534460152013-04-30T11:17:00.002-05:002013-04-30T11:17:38.922-05:00New Computers There are two new computers in the Youth Services department ready for use just in time for the Summer Reading Program. The machines are pre-loaded with games (no more CDs in and out!) Everything from Dora and Sesame Street to USA geography and make your own music. They even have stories and movies that you can read or watch. Age range is from preschool through 6th grade. The computers are not attached to the web so there is no need for an Internet card on file.

The graphics are fantastic! Each has a splitter so that an adult and child can work together with headphones like they did on our Teaching computer. One program has a mouse tutorial to help little ones become comfortable with click/drag/drop. Menus are so easy to navigate. Programs and menus are audio supported.

Stop in soon to try out these incredible machines! Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1699087895878268718.post-51461258087091358092013-04-17T11:26:00.000-05:002013-04-17T11:26:20.301-05:00Bugs!How often are people excited to receive "bugs" in the mail? We are! Our first shipment of painted lady butterfly larvae has arrived at the Library and now resides in my office window. For caterpillars they are pretty cute.

Come in often to watch them grow and change! While you are here, be sure to check out a book about butterflies.Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1699087895878268718.post-39606181574618937762013-04-08T14:12:00.001-05:002013-04-08T14:12:21.209-05:00Butterflies! Butterflies!Spring looks like it has finally arrived! Due to the cold weather we have had this month, we ordered our butterfly larvae shipment a little later than past years. Now we are happy to report that the first shipment should arrive sometime between the 15th and 19th with the second shipment one a week later.

Each year it is fascinating to watch the larvae grow, spin, and emerge as beautiful painted ladies. What a miracle! One can even notice larvae growth from the time the library opens to closing time.

The habitat will be on view in my office window in the Library Annex
during Library business hours. Be sure to come in often during mid
April to the first part of May so you can see all the changes that
occur.

After the butterflies hatch we will release them into the wild. Maybe you will see one of them in your backyard this summer!Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1699087895878268718.post-57196001313985069222013-02-07T14:43:00.002-06:002013-02-07T14:43:27.185-06:00Spring Sessions Are Here!Spring sessions for story times and Art/Craft Classes start the week of February 11. Or if you prefer, curl up on one of the chairs and read them while you are at the Library! We hope to have this display periodically throughout the coming year.Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1699087895878268718.post-49180511575628693782012-12-05T14:53:00.000-06:002012-12-05T14:53:28.474-06:00Tuesday With Santa

Tuesday, December 4th marked our annual Tuesday With Santa night at the Library Annex. Many children visited with Santa, made a craft, and wrote letters for our special North Pole Mailbox.Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1699087895878268718.post-88069400331413767222012-11-29T14:06:00.002-06:002012-12-05T14:54:08.400-06:00Ho-Ho-Holidays!As you are thinking about Christmas and all the preparations needed to get ready for the holidays, consider setting aside fifteen minutes each evening you are home with your family to share a special Christmas story. This tradition will give everyone of all ages a chance to relax and reflect while building memories that can last a lifetime.

My three grown children remember those books we shared years ago. We still talk about some of them when we are together for the holidays. My favorites have always included How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss, The Berenstain Bears' Christmas Tree, and The Best Christmas Pagent Ever by Barbara Robinson. There are also newer ones, too: Moxy Maxwell Does Not Love Writing Thank-You Notes by Peggy Gifford and Barbara Parks' Junie B., Fist Grader: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells. Michael Keene's new book this year, The Night Santa Got Lost: How NORAD Saved Christmas, reminds me of all the years my aviator son has kept track of Santa's progress via his computer.

We have many books for all ages available on our displays for check out now. Even younger ones may enjoy a chapter book that the family reads to each other each, with older siblings taking a turn as a reader. (No need to mention it is great reading skills practice.) Be sure to include the classic favorites and some funny ones as well.

My best wishes to you and yours this holiday season! Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1699087895878268718.post-4052356009720797982012-11-20T10:30:00.000-06:002012-11-20T10:30:10.305-06:00Tuesday With SantaBelieve it or not the holidays are upon us! We will be hosting our annual Tuesday With Santa on December 4 from 5:00 - 6:30 PM in the Library Annex.

Children may sit on Santa's lap to tell him their hearts' desires, write a letter, post it in our special North Pole mailbox, and make a small craft to take home. Be sure to bring your cameras for lots of pictures!

Many holiday books will be on display. Perhaps you are looking for a cookbook to use with your children, or crafts that the family could make to decorate your home. We have books that describe holidays in different lands, stories from around the world, and of course your old favorites. Or perhaps you would like a Christmas DVD to share with entire family. Let us help you find just what you are looking for!
Many have already come by to get theirs, but we still have a number to distribute before the start of school. Remember that August 22 has been designated "Wear your Shirt to School Day!"

August 9 and 10 will be the Library's first Scholastic Book Fair. Come in and check out all the new books for fall. You may shop in the Community Room of the Annex starting at 9:00 am. The Fair is open until 6:30 on Thursday and 4:00 on Friday. Can't make it to the Library on those days? No problem! Click on the Book Fair link on our Library website homepage and shop on-line August 6 - 13! Your selections will be delivered to the Library for pickup later in August. Tock! The clock is quickly ticking down for this year's Summer Reading Program! Readers have until closing time (1 PM) on Saturday, July 21 to get their reading logs into the Annex Building. I will be setting up the last of the shirt order that afternoon when we close.

It has been a fantastic summer. Our readers have really been busy reading all those books they could not find time to read during the school year. And with the temperatures hovering around 100 degrees the past three weeks, sitting in the air conditioning reading has been a favorite way to pass the time!

Now with all the reading goals met, maybe we will have some cooler days to go outside and enjoy the free time before school begins.

Remember to pick up your goal shirt starting Monday, July 30 at 9:30. With the fair and school shopping starting you don't want to forget it.

While you are there, pick up a flyer for the Scholastic Book Fair in the Annex on August 9 and 10. There will be books for the entire family, even Mom and Dad! Can't make it into the library on those days? That's okay. You can also shop on-line. Just watch our library website page for a link to shop!

Great job everyone!Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1699087895878268718.post-91262048751664401152012-07-09T13:41:00.000-05:002012-07-09T13:41:49.704-05:00Summer Reading Ending! Can you believe it?! The Summer Reading Program for Teens ends on Saturday, July 14.

Readers in the pre-school reading (colored logs) and ages through 12 years have until closing time on Saturday, July 21 at 1:00 pm to turn in their logs for the summer. So review you logs and get those last pages read so I can order your goal shirt! Some schools are also very close to winning their trophies, so be sure to check the bulletin board to see where your school is on the checkout counter!

I will compile the shirt lists, school counts, and top readers over that weekend. (I have busy Saturday and Sunday afternoons!) Please do not put logs in the drop box!! They can become stuck. We want to be able to give both readers and schools all the credit that is due, but we cannot if logs are not turned in properly.

We have been so proud of all our readers this summer! All of our programs have had great turn outs, our story time classes have been very full, and our Art/Craft Classes have also had waiting lists. With the very hot temperatures the library has been a great place to cool off and read!

Remember that your reading doesn't need to end with the program. We welcome everyone to continue their visits every week, find even more great stories to read, and be sure to visit our Scholastic Book Fair August 9 and 10! Keep checking the website and my blog for more information. It is true that "Reading is SO Delicious!" Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1699087895878268718.post-32614445223196355712012-06-22T11:43:00.000-05:002012-06-22T11:43:49.537-05:00Summer Reading Half Way PointIt is hard to believe that the 2012 Summer Reading Program reaches its half way mark tomorrow! The time has flown, hasn't it? Now is the time to check your reading progress to see how close you are to your goal. Teens, be sure to come in to pick up your prizes from the weekly drawings.

Need new reading material? We are getting new books in every week, so be sure to check the display bookcase as you come in to the Youth Services department.

We have enjoyed talking with you about your selections and seeing you at the Thursday events and Story Times. Yesterday, Pattie Williams delighted us with her balloon art sculptures. You can see the banana split and hamburger balloons on top of the stacks (until the air goes down).

There are still great programs coming up! Next week will be musician Mike Anderson. The 4th of July week we will take a break from programs so that every class has an even amount of attendance for the summer. WE WILL BE CHECKING LOGS THAT WEEK!!! So come in and see us for more books.

After the holiday week, we will have two more Thursday events, so watch for information about them.

Happy reading.Ms. Louhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15808607851527935224noreply@blogger.com0
